Wow! That wood is beautiful. Lovely grain and shape. Sad to lose them. Keep some of the pieces - they will make great garden stools... and weather really beautifully.

That is some beautiful hardwood. I'm with @netkonnexion perhaps even take to a block or two with a mallet & chisel and see what's hiding within.
