Juvenile Butcher Bird by koalagardens

Juvenile Butcher Bird

The juvenile has brown instead of black and the demarkations between brown and white are hazy.
Thank you for enjoying my wildlife photos and commenting on so many!
Look how different the young one looks! But also pretty!

Why are they called a butcher bird? Do they butcher something?

@sailingmusic they have this behaviour of storing extra food by impaling it and leaving it to hang in trees. They are beautiful to look at, incredible to hear singing, but they are agressive predators and eat other small birds, lizards and insects, yet they will also eat some fruits and seeds.

Really important predator in the Australian bush. I have a lot of them here and love them :)

This is a beautiful and interesting bird ...very nice close-up!

Our shrikes exhibit the same behavior; they often impale their prey. It sounds rather brutal, but they are such beautiful, interesting birds that it is a treat to see them. I imagine your butcher birds must be a welcome addition to your habitat.
