I wonder when these natives of Canada, USA and Mexico decided to emigrate to Australia and how long it took them.

We have a large migratory layover about a mile from our house. They're starting to arrive and I can't wait to see the masses!

@jesika2 they came a long time back when the fluffy seeds of the milkweed was used as packing material. the material was then discarded and seeds and eggs were thrown out to the landscape. as they don't predate on our native butterflies, I don't remove any milkweed and enjoy the monarchs year round as it is mild enough here they don't attempt to migrate

@olivetreeann maybe not this particular one, but I do see cocoons if I search - there are many hundreds of milkweed plants on the property and I see dozens and dozens of the butterflies each day - so beautiful!

@aikiuser it would be spectacular! here, because the climate is so mild (subtropical) they just stay and breed year round. I never get to actually see them in the masses of a northern migration, but I do basically see monarchs every day of the year. the photos I have seen of them en masse are breathtaking!

@koalagardens thank you, that’s fascinating information. Used properly, the internet is a marvellous learning tool.
