Pecking Order by loey5150

Pecking Order

I'm posting this for tomorrow's photo.
We feed the local birds & early this morning, Bernie saw this sight & called me to take a shot.
A mature magpie had a baby magpie on the ground on its back with its foot on it keeping it there while another baby had a feed.
This went on for about 10 minutes & after a couple of peckings, the bird on the ground lay still for the entire time.
Afterwards, the poor thing was looking around as it ate its share of the food.
Has anyone hard of this before - we haven't & I'm sure we were lucky to see this.
That's so interesting! I'd never heard of anything like it before for sure.

@melissapike - we thought it very odd too.

I think each species has its own way of doing things, showing who is boss, but it looks like even though this little one is on the ground, it is still speaking its mind

I've never heard of such a thing, but they're awfully intelligent birds, aren't they! Just fascinated by the thought process going on here! Wouldn't Jodie love to see this?! I guess she finished her project...

I saw this happen earlier this week. Two adults were bullying the younger bird. I felt awful watching it until 5 or 6 smaller birds, not maggies, flew in to help out. Eventually they chased the big magpies off and the young one flew into a nearby tree to recover. Nature is fascinating isn't it?

@digitalrn @Weezilou @pizzaboy @wilbo43 - We were fascinated by this as you all were.
As we are minding Jay, we moved the feed higher & the smaller birds stood back & waited their turns - strange :)

That is remarkable. Your title is so appropriate. It is so interesting to learn the ins and outs of Nature. I'm sure they would go unnoticed if you weren't paying close attention and carrying a camera! Thanks for creating this fascinating collage.
