1,000 Miles From The Sea... by lsquared

1,000 Miles From The Sea...

This seagull (and its friends) were scavenging around the local park at lunch today. Very grey day, but near 50 degrees, so I'm not complaining.

The title is borrowed from an old Randy Newman song, although we're more like 700 miles from the sea....

Sing a sad song for a good man, Sing a sad song for me
Sing a sad song for the sailor, A thousand miles from the sea
We call 'em lot gulls or field gulls. They are many generations from the sea. :-)

I guess it is a ring-billed gull, after some internet research: "These are the gulls you're most likely to see far away from coastal areas—in fact, most Ring-billed Gulls nest in the interior of the continent, near freshwater."

We have gulls at our lake, but we are only 70 miles from the coast. Great shot.
