@gardencat Thank you Joanne. Most jellyfish have some sort of sting, but that little one with the rings, is one that doesn't have any.
The white ones can give you a sting similar to a nettle sting, but from experience I don't think the pain lasts as long as a nettle does.
The one to watch out for is the Lion's Mane one I posted, last week. This does have a slightly more powerful sting, but the problem is it is much larger and has very long tentacles, so has a much greater numbers of stingers. Unless, you are allergic to them,( I am not), they really only pose a problem if you manage to get stung, around your mouth and nose area. It might cause breathing difficulties.
I wear a long wetsuit, and fins, so only my ankles and hands are exposed. I also tend to swim with my head out of the water, unless I am photographing, and I will have checked first.
I have been stung by Lions Mane jellyfish, several times and know its painful, but not unbearable. Hauling lobster/ crab pots into the boat with friends, you sometimes come across lines with masses of tentacles wrapped around the line. I've been caught like that, and probably the most painful time was when an idiot jet skier, decided to make lions mane jellyfish soup by sucking them up into the water intake, very close to the beach. It just released thousands upon thousands of stings into the sea, and loads of swimmers got stung, some quite badly. He got yelled at, think he would have got clouted if he came ashore, and he ended up sitting out off shore, for hours till most of the people left the beach.
I never bother but there are creams you can buy to relieve the stings, if needed. Don't pee on the stings, thats an old wives tale, or put fresh water on them, that makes it worse. You can use seawater to wash them off carefully.
@markp Thanks for all that background info. I've never been stung but once, in Jamaica, we were riding horses, in water, along the edge of the beach and one person in our group got stung and, from her reaction, it was not a pleasant experience. Wearing a wet suit makes a lot of sense.
