CROSSING THE SHIP CANAL

One of the reasons the new Mersey Gateway bridge over the River Mersey is so high above the water is that the Manchester Ship Canal is still used by some large ships from time to time.
They need to be able to sail underneath it here.
You are looking at the southern,( Runcorn),end.
The main bridge is behind me.
