Deja Vu by mej2011

Deja Vu

It's yet another day of nothing going right for me photographically speaking. I got an idea last night for today's shoot, and it was rubbish. Sometimes my brain doesn't comprehend the fact that I don't know how to accomplish the images it produces. I gave up on that idea after awhile, figuring I'll go back to it when I have more time to play with my tripod (have I ever mentioned that I am NOT a fan of tripods?) Then I was shooting a billion different things trying to understand some of the critiques and tips on other shots that I've gotten today. That didn't go well either, all of those photos were either too blurry, or too dark, or too over exposed. I think I need a photography genie that I can keep in my pocket at all times to tell me repeatedly what I am doing wrong for each shot.
Okay, rambling over. Mr. Squirrel decided to sit long enough today for a photo, so I shot him as a last resort. I did absolutely no editing because by this point I was tired of photos. Here's hoping for a better tomorrow.
Oh I like Mr Squirrel! Love those highlights in his fur!

You are right, a genie in your pocket to help with tips from the start to the finish would be super. It is hard to offer suitable advice after the event. And it would be easier if we could see what the image looked like before post-production.

But coolio Mr S.

You seem to offer advice very well after the photo has taken place. Well, this photo looked just like this before post production because I haven't done anything to it. Hmmmmmmm. Maybe I'll use picnik to create before and after photos for a while, maybe that'll help figure out what I'm doing wrong exactly?

@mej2011 - you will notice on my project that I am a bit of a fan of the "top and bottom" crop where I stretch out the image along the landscape plane. I would do that here. Just trim a teeny bit off the top so that highest horizontal stick is gone. Then trim a bit off the bottom, maybe some more on this edge, but don't lose Mr Fluffys tail. Then a little trim off the right maybe so that the bottom right hand corner is where the tree trunk emerges from.

I don't do a lot of post-production, I just normally mess around with sharpness and contrast and sometimes exposure, so I would have a bit of a play to see how you could really make the highlighted fur, really pop!

Some experts in the world of photoshoppe could offer you some cool ways to get rid of the stick and how to sharpen up only Mr S and not the rest, but I have no idea there.

But this is just my humble opinion.

I'd crop the bottom to position the main branch to bottom right corner (careful with the tail!). That way you also get rid of the distracting branch on bottom left corner. Then I'd make sure the squirrel is at the horizontal center of the pic, which may or may not require cropping a teeny slice off from the top.

I totally love that branch in front of the squirrel, because the tail is wrapped around it :-)

@janmaki
You want the squirrel to be center of the pic? I thought you don't like the subject being center of the pic?

@bobfoto
I will give your suggestions a shot. Thanks!

@mej2011 no, the squirrel is still there on the left. I meant vertical center, not horizontal. Sorry to confuse you daily :-D

Yep, sooc. Apparently my camera decided to be nice to me. I really do think he's got a mind of his own. Yes, my camera is a male. lol. Thanks so much! Did you get my message on facebook the other day, by chance?

@mej2011 oh I did, just today though. Thanks for letting me know, I made sure to thank Courtney - I probably would have missed that notification otherwise. Pickle feels all super now:)
