Cordoba is famous for its “patios” (courtyards). Traditionally, houses were built around a “patio”, which was filled with plants in an attempt to cool off the air, even a bit. The tradition of looking after a patio is well alive in Cordoba, and they hold the Fiesta de los Patios in May. Then, the best 50 are open to the public and free, and there are prizes for the best patio; about 3 million people visit each year to watch them. Most patios are closed the rest of the year, as they belong to private houses, but some of them have decided to open all year round, and organised a route to see them (I’ve visited these patios, and I’ve loved it. The owners welcome you and explain anything you want to know about the patios). The Patios in Córdoba were declared Intangible Heritage by UNESCO in 2012.
Wow to go on a visiting tour like that to see all the different plants and enjoy all the gorgeous colours must be a thrill. thanks for the explanation. fav.
@ljmanning@mittens@bruni@lesip@ziggy77@merrelyn@fishers@ingrid01 Thanks a lot! They use a long cane with a tin attached top one end to water the high pots. There is a statue showing it - I’ll post it one of these days. (One of the owners explained that automatic watering devices can’tbe used because every plant has different water needs)
