All right: i didn't want to dismiss bokeh on the first fail. But I think the time has come to admit it. I went out yesterday evening on a second try for bokeh and I've got some cool light trail. This composition really sucks. I admit that the bokeh is better here, but the subject is pointless and storyless and poorly focused. I just can't get it right.
There is nothing wrong with the bokeh here. Try using a subject that is on one plane or with a more distinct central focal point. It doesn’t have to be a masterpiece, it’s just practice. Keep at it, you’ll get it.
I think you have the concept down; you just need a bit more refining. For this one, I would have focused in more closely on one or two of the stems, rather than several. That would tighten your composition and still give you some bokeh in the back.
That said, if you don't like it/don't enjoy it, don't do it! Don't need to create frustration for yourself.
@ljmanning You are so right! My thought was I should at least try. More than once. But yes, self inflicted frustration is pointless.
And you are right about the composition. Here, i do like the bokeh, but the focus in the bush is lousy. I think that is what is bothering me. I think the dof was really too small for this subject. Well, I'll see where i go from here. I really appreciate the input.
@cdcook48 Yep, right! At least, in my mind, that's what i repeat: it's exercise.
I agree the bokeh is fine here. But the subject is not. And the thing is there was nothing else in that area. Just these pots with the same plants. Not much choice. At least i did not spot any other composition. Maybe a more trained eye could make something of it.
I really appreciate the input.
Don't give up, just play a little! You and bokeh shots might become best friends! (I agree with Laura @ljmanning less is more for this subject, your goal was to show us bokeh and you didn't even like the bush)
Fabulous bokeh, lovely tones and a nice frame. You already know that the issue is the focusing on the plant but as others have said, it's because it's not on one plane but despite that I really like it.
You've got the bokeh you just need to find the subject you enjoy. I agree keep playing with it, you need to give it more than just a couple of tries. Besides if it's not difficult then success would be boring.....
