Well, I don't know why these things happen to me but I think I found his girlfriend at the Botanic Gardens yesterday. I have no idea what this flower is. It's very small, barely 2cm long, and was in a cluster of 4 or 5 other ones.
Does it not look like a pair of naked female legs from the hips down? Or have I totally, inexplicably, irredeemably lost my mind? 8D
EDIT: This is the Euphorbia tithymaloides plant. Other names include Devil's Backbone, Slipper Flower, Red Slipper Spurge and Zig-Zag Plant. 8)

@pyrrhula The next time I'm at the Botanic Gardens again, I'll see if I can find it and ask someone. Even now, I'm not sure if I can find the exact spot again. I didn't see these flowers the last few times when I was there. Here is another photograph of a few of these flowers together: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v57/shaggycat/ladylegs2.jpg You can go ahead and use that photograph to post on other forums or websites to see if anyone recognizes the flowers. I remember it was a low plant because I had to hunch over a little to take the shots. 8)
A great, big, oddly bare, red-faced, perfectly leggy "THANK YOU!" to all!
Very happy to know that this strange little flower has made you laugh. I look at it now and it still makes me wonder. Nature is incredible. As for losing my mind, yeah, it happens often. 8D
it doesn't look like legs, it looks like the real thing, shaved and all. your mind and mine, okay, just mine, is in the gutters and is unretrievable! great shot, livia.
