Did you know that the grasshopper is sometimes referred to as the short-horned grasshopper to distinguish it from the katydids (American English) and bush crickets (British English)? Because grasshoppers have short antennae and ovipositors. Grasshoppers also have ears on the sides of the abdomen whereas a katydid's ears are on its legs. (Isn't that weird? I'm glad my ears are not on my legs! XD)
The grasshopper in my shot is a nymph (not an adult). He was about 1cm (0.3in). Grasshoppers are common here, so I often see them. Do view large if you want to see more details. 8)
Wow, so tiny Livia you have amazing eyes; I am not sure I have ever seen a grass hopper maybe in Spain but that maybe crickets, really not good at the nature stuff:0)
Interesting facts. Who knew I would be so educated about bugs on a photography site. A great way to expand my mind. This is fantastic, but I'v got to say I get freaked out byt them, way too jumpy!
@maggotx Haha, I just google for information! I like being able to learn more about my macro subjects. 8)
@riversdale For all my macro shots, I use my Sony NEX-C3 which is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. I bought a Sony 30mm f/3.5 macro lens for it. 8)
Instant FAV!!! The color's in this shot are just amazing! I was wondering the same as Jolly but you just answered that question for me ! I was going to get that Sony Nex for a back up camera and now i wished i did!,,Great Job Livia!!!
Great to see you back on your Macro grind, If its not broke don't fix it! I think I need a new pun/quote to start using I feel like I have over used that one of late. great work as usual livia :)
what a lovely spotty hopper, i have heard some have their ears on their legs, it must get very loud when they rub their legs together to make that noise!
A great, big, freshly green and generously spotted, really bright "THANK YOU!" to everyone for taking the time to stop by and write a comment! I think grasshoppers are pretty, especially the tiny ones. Most of them are quite shy though. Only the brave ones hold still enough, long enough, for me to take shots of. Thank you again, for your constant support. I appreciate it so much!
Extraordinary capture. Love the colors and detail. Reminds me of childhood, sitting in grass trying to catch them. Sometimes you did, but most times you didn't. And on the rare occassion you get a Praying Mantis. Lol
