I think I smiled all the way home after shooting this gorgeous fellow at the mangrove forest!
Because I like snakes. And I've always wanted to see the Oriental Whip Snake in the wild. That's what he is. He is not an adult, only about 60cm long (2ft), and very slender. And he really is such a bright yellow-green.
Oriental whip snakes are mildly venomous but shy. They give birth to live young. Notice the groove in front of his eye? These distinctive grooves allow for stereoscopic vision so that the snake can judge distances more accurately when hunting.

Mildly venomous? Does that mean, it won't kill ya but just make ya really sick? Great capture, Livia! It certainly is a a beautiful color with some very cool details!
"Mildly venomous"? What does that mean - antihistamine or hospital? I love your photo Livia - just glad it's not something we need to worry about very much here!
That is some original looking snake. I have never heard of it or seen one like this before. What a beautiful color. I like how you just have it's head in the photo,so crisp and clear.
Wow, what a gorgeous photo and nice to know what it is as I have never seen one like this before. I prefer my snakes at places that have them behind glass but enjoy your photos a lot. You are brave to be out there with the things you photograph.
Lovely image, if you had thrown the dof the other way he would look just like part of the plant, tree or shrub that it is obviously dressed to hide in!
oh wow, Livia!! such a stunning shot, and for a snake it's very pretty! I think i would have run a mile rather than do the clever thing and get a shot of it! fav'd!
@aleksandra I've worried about dropping the camera should a spider, no bigger than my thumbnail, jump at me while I took a shot but, with this snake, I was okay. For one thing, I like snakes better than spiders. For another thing, this snake was very relaxed, he kept quite still the whole time. I've seen snakes that actively moved their heads to look at me when I moved, and I left those alone because I know I don't want to get close enough to take a shot, they seemed suspicious and agitated. This one was quiet, and kept quite still. 8)
A great, big, somewhat shy, green-hued and surprisingly bright "THANK YOU!" to everyone!
I'm so happy about this shot because I love this snake and how it looks, so I was really glad to have the opportunity to see it and take photos. Thank you so much for stopping by and taking a look! I appreciate your supportive words very much. Again, thank you!
amazing, wonderful photo!
(I'm in shock, hahaha -because I feel panic in front of snakes...once, near to a river, a snake was following a little mouse, when I saw it, I left my husband and just hear in my head: "run Olga, run" -and I did it :D )
Livia Just stopped bye to tell you that i caught one of these snakes in a bush near my house today and it scared the life out of me!! I was trying to get the dragonfly and i leaned over the bush and right below my chin this snake was just slivering bye!! Same identical color!! So cool after i got over the fright!! I caught it!!
