Those tones go so well together, that red is just so mesmerizingly red. It somehow makes me think of flaming locks of hair, yes yes I know I´m weird :D

@meandmydog It looks like some sort of Japanese Maple (acer) to me but it's a little hard to tell from this angle. There are a zillion cultivars.

It's not unusual for the outer leaves of a plant to be damaged by frost but protect the inner leaves. I'm going to guess, unless the black tips are a characteristic of this cultivar/species, that only the tips of the leaf were exposed to enough cold to turn black, while the leaves themselves trapped some heat.
Alternate guess - it's not the frost that damages a plant, it's the sunlight hitting the ice crystal which acts as a "burning mirror." When we'd get late frosts in the Spring at the garden center, one of us would get up early and spray the roses down with cold water from the hose before the sunlight hit them, to protect the foliage. So maybe these leaves were frosted at dawn, but only the tips were unshaded and damaged.
