St. Agnes in Cornwall impressed me with the simple beauty of the surroundings and its long industrial history. Tin and other minerals have been mined there for nearly 3000 years. In fact a few hundred yards from this abandoned mine building and chimney is the site of the only working tin mine left in Cornwall. The tin 'lode' in Cornwall is too uneconomic and much of the country rock is contaminated with other minerals making extraction expensive. However, the purity of the Blue Hills site is so good that they can keep mining. They are a family business and sell most of their tin as trinkets moulded on-site. The metal itself is extracted using the old iron and wooden equipment run by water power. A true cottage industry. A true Cornish legacy maintained.
