seriously, it is the thing I would never ever go into the woods without. It has a sense of scale and direction and prevents me from getting lost. It is a handy compass.

Well, since everyone is guessing compass, I'm going to go with a metronome. OR, a level. Definitely NOT a compass.

Isn't it one of those posh compasses you get in shops for the outward bound? The type of compass that's got other bits on it for map reading.
