McDonalds Self Service by nzkites

McDonalds Self Service

Today we visited Hamilton to see how our new granddaughter and her parents were doing. After a nice cuddly time we decided to stop off at McDonalds for a late lunch. Today there were no cashiers at all within sight, just lots of Self Serve Kiosks with one friendly looking bloke standing next to one of them. He asked if he could help and we told him what we wanted to order. Sure he said I will help you order as he tapped the screen. We said that we have used these before and had not enjoyed the experience. Then I noticed that he had the words trainer or some such thing on the back of his shirt. I stepped back and left Janice to work on our order with the help of this trainer. She was getting more and more frustrated and grumpy with the screen, and me for taking photos on my phone. I was starting to laugh, and realising that this may not be the best thing to do. Anyway the order was completed and the nice man gave us a number and told us to take a seat and let McDonalds do all the work. This caused me to have a real belly laugh as we took a seat. I won’t use the photos of the ordering for today's photo. The photo above was also taken in McDonalds Hamilton today. We really don’t like those Self Serve Kiosks. Lucky we don’t eat there often!
Good photo - bad experience. I agree with you - I hate the way these companies use their customers as unpaid employees - and fire the real employees who needed that job. Especially McDonalds - so many kids have started their working lives at McDonalds!

@robz Exactly Rob Z My daughter's first job was as a check out person in McDonald's and it increased her confidence lots, helped her become a good team member etc.

We visited a McDonalds in another town and not only did they have self service but they also did home deliveries!

@jks85 Thanks Judith No home deliveries here yet. Guess that is what they are getting all the unemployed check out workers to do.

Great photo, I didn't see this.
From my point of view this visit to McD's was a very frustrating experience. We have used the self service thing a few times before but would much prefer talking to a real person at the counter. We said as much, but that wasn't an option here! The 'trainer' was very fast with his swiping and tapping of the touch screen, and rather than teaching, seemed to be showing off his expertise. I was very slow in comparison and ended up choosing things we didn't want, then having to cancel the order and start again about three times. I turned around to ask John a question several times and found he was just photographing me - hence my annoyance. So just as well for him that he didn't post a photo of my grumpy face, hehe. The whole thing took way longer than it would have if we'd ordered at the counter. At the end of the self service process, I would have been happy to pick up the completed order at the counter, but the 'trainer' chose to give us a number and told us to be seated, relax and let McDonalds do the work - as John already mentioned. You can imagine my response.

@kali66 I'm just having a windup. I guess next they will be giving us the ingredients and we may have to cook it ourselves. LOL

Haha loved your story. I haven't used these self serve kiosks. Will remember you if and when I do!

@dkbarnett Thanks we did enjoy our burger a Loaded lettuce one with no bun but wrapped in a lettuce leaf, and a cup of coffee.

@kali66 If you mean my annoyance with @nzkites, it finished as soon as we heard the 'let McDonalds do the work' comment and both saw the funny side. And I may have been a bit hangry as well ;-)

@chikadnz @nzkites seriously though they say a large percentage of jobs wont exist in a decade or two because of AI

@kali66 Yes kali that is what were are worried about and always prefer to be served by a person and give them a sense of worth by working rather than sitting home. We saw an article on the news recently about a bank that was developing a virtual customer service person that could read the customers mood and respond accordingly. It has us worried about what it will be like for our children born today.

You were very brave to persevere! I would have gone somewhere else!

@maggiemae Yes we should have but it was 3 pm and we had looked at a couple of coffee shops that had not much left for lunch as it was late. So McDonald's was our last choice.
