Gedling Colliery was sunk in 1899-1902, two seams were worked, Top Hard ceased production in 1972 and production continued in High Hazel until the mine closed in 1991.
The 2010 memorial in the form of a Davey Safety Lamp is dedicated to the 128 miners who lost their lives at Gedling Colliery and all those who worked there
