It is not only villages that have decorative signs but this one needs a bit of attention. Even cities grew from villages or small towns.
Derby, pronounce DAR-bee, is the county town of Derbyshire It gained city status in 1977 and lies on the banks of the river Derwent.
The Romans established the town of Dervento here. The Vikings name Djure-by. In old English recorded as Deoraby- “village of the Deer”. By 1610 it appeared on maps as Darby or Darbye
Derby was one of the five boroughs of the Danelaw. It was a market town which grew rapidly during the industrial revolution
