Back Up

When the law states that people need to stay 50 feet back from marine mammals like these sea lions, this is not what they mean.

Yes, they are cute, yes they have teeth like a dog and move fast on land.
Looks like they are fenced in pretty good! they look rather docile in this photo!

Cool shot ,Shakira, the Colombian pop superstar is out here on holiday and made the news by getting to close and being bitten by a seal only last week.

@steeler See, even celebrities need to follow the rules! ;)

Great shot, it annoys me to no end when people don't respect wildlife.

Great catch, Dixie. Can't believe what I'm seeing there . .he's holding a little one! Yikes.

That's amazing! (I definitely wouldn't get too close! That guy with the kid is scaring me)

Crazy, those things are cute but they can be aggressive.

Meant the seals, not the kid. Although...

We went to Kangaroo Island and saw some seals. Whilst they do look large, slow and cumbersome, my instinct was to go closer and try to pat them. The guide just touched my arm and warned me of the dangers. This man looks a little foolish to be so close. Great photo.

Arrgghh! These people drive me nuts! We saw this at Yellowstone National Park a few years ago - people have absolutely NO idea that wild animals are, well, WILD. And then they wonder why someone didn't protect them from said animals. Grrr.

@hoosierhokie Yeah, i grew up in Yellowstone, amazing, pet a moose, get in a circle around a buffalo, put honey on your kids face to get a picture of the bear Licking her face - and then if someone gets hurt, "Let's destroy that animal, he's gone bad!"

So you shouldn't take a small child within petting distance? Ok good to know. Ha!

@ladydi53 Not fenced in at all although I see why this angle makes it look like it

YIKES! Watching the sea lions in San Fran, they are quite mean to each other! I wouldn't want to be that close!
February 22nd, 2012
Do they come up there because people feed them? I think I'd keep my distance!
February 22nd, 2012
@olivetreeann No, they used to bask in the sun and nap on the docks, but the tsunami that hit Japan in March 2011, destroyed all our docks too, so now they come up here to rest. They are good at feeding themselves but there are a couple that hand out by the pier and will jump up on it to be hand fed when a fishing boat is unloaded. Seeing them jump maybe 10 feet straight out of the water is impressive too.
