I get to teach in a lot of different classrooms, and in this special ed class I sat down at the front of the room and realized that the teacher had put reminders to himself where only he could see them, on the front of the desks. Another one said, "You may be the only person who believes in me."
A teacher who is attempting to teach without inspiring the pupil with a desire to learn is hammering on cold iron.

Huh, interesting! Keeping himself present--I think it's good for the students to see that teachers need reminders too. I always remind my kiddos that teachers are human (and completely fallible at times!)
@scrappy Of Course, I substitute teach in the same district, a small unified county. I taught special ed here for 10 years and have subbed for 13 now. My kids were students here and my husband teaches music. I think I know everyone.
This just blows me away, Dixie. Especially love the quote, "You may be the only person who believes in me!" Wow . . this can be used for anything in life that one does. It makes me teary that we don't always think about people like this, no matter what the situation may be. This is not just for teachers . . but it sure would inspire me to do all that I could, if I were a teacher. Great lesson. :)
@pandorasecho Just wondering why he does this. Does he need inspiration or re-convincing over time? I have a mildly autistic boy in my class who wears me out, I can NOT imagine a whole class of special needs children.
@scrappy I know he has been in the same class for years, and his kids have a lot of behavior, attitude problems. I'm sure though that it is mostly a reminder, he also has a bunch of signs on the inside of the classroom door to remind the students before they walk out, including, did I borrow a pencil? and Am I wearing a smile?
@pandorasecho I would probably need the same. I know people say this for me, teaching early years but I don't know how I would hold up teaching special ed. WOW!
That's a good idea I think. It doesn't hurt to remind yourself- no matter who you are- that the way you interact with others IS going to impact them either positively or negatively. So which would you rather it be? Good shot!
