Last year a wind storm knocked a few panels of wood out of the Drive-in movie screen and the season was delayed for repairs. Tragedy, I tell you.
Here the local kids sneak in through the bushes to watch from up front without paying. Before and between features there are games of frisbee or tag. There is underage drinking at times but also a lot of family fun. People used to gather on the grass beside their car but it was too easy for a late arrival to try to find an empty parking space and nearly park on a person in a lawn chair or sleeping bag. Now there is a white wooden railing and people on the lawn have to stay in front of it if they don't want to sit in their cars.
The perimeter of the theater grounds are encouraged trees and blackberry vines, but if someone tries to park outside and watch for free from the wrong side of the fence, Red's sons have been known to broadcast such messages as, "Will the cheapskate in the green truck either come in and pay for the movie or leave.'
Love your pov here, Dixie ... and the drive leading up to the entry (?). I know just what you mean in your commentary ... people always try to sneak into the drive-ins. It's all part of the history of these places and the fun. Was so great for families and still is in your area. There should be more of these around. The family that goes to a drive-in together ... has FUN togerher!
Very funny editorial on your photo! But oh how it brought back so many drive-in memories! Wish we had more drive-in theatres now...I only know of one about two hours away from Kamloops.
the last time i've been in a drive-in movie was when i was five. actually only a few people had cars so most of those who watched brought blankets and sat on the grassy ground. i was more interested in the popcorn or cotton candy than watching. with almost everything free on the internet these days, people are getting spoiled and just want everything at no cost. very nice composition, dixie.
I love what you wrote, Dixie. Brings back memories of the drive in movies when I was a kid with my parents and sisters and when I went with friends. We still have one drive in open in the area where we live. Love the behind the scenes of this drive in. Nice photo, Dixie.
