Wednesdays are supposed to be the day you break out of the rut and experiment a bit this 30daysinjune challenge. I have always wanted, but been very nervous about taking pictures of the many street people we have here because of the mild, year round temperatures. It didn't seem like it should need to take much nerve to snap this shot out of my car window, but I still felt a pang of knowing that I wouldn't want to be the man having my picture taken this way. Still uncomfortable, but then the street people should make us uncomfortable. Our comfort gets too easy at times.
You're right about the fact that we should be uncomfortable around street people - not so much them, but their situation in life. Glad he at least has his dogs.
i have lots of pics of people in the street. mostly from behind, though, or only when i'm in a moving car. or i pretend i'm looking up or elsewhere. it could get uncomfortable, especially if there are malicious people behind you who like to nose around. happened to me once, my subject didn't know i took her picture, the woman behind me saw me and went to tell the subject what i did. wanted to whack her with my camera but i didn't want to break it. nice job here, dixie.
Street shots take some delicacy. Knowing when to ask, when to shoot from the hip or when to quickly take the shot and smile a thank you without really asking for permission, or knowing when you should delete the shot even though you know it's a good one. My street shots always seem to gravitate toward things or buildings but I really admire photographers who can take the people shots. I think for a quick snap from the car this came out ok!
