Another less than stellar shot, but it's yet another small peek at the Rose Parade behind-the-scenes venues.
This is Tournament House, formerly known as Wrigley Mansion. Yes, THAT Wrigley.
It is but one of the vintage mansions in the area of town called Millionaire's Row. (FYI, I live waaaay over on the OTHER side of town. LOL)
Among other mansions along The Row are Gamble House (Proctor and Gamble), and Bissell House (carpet sweeper company).
When Mrs Wrigley died in 1958, the mansion was presented to the City of Pasadena with the condition that it become the permanent headquarters for the Tournament of Roses.
This place gets busy this time of year. All the official rose parade 'stuff' happens here, lots of parties and such. A few days ago I drove by and there was a huge catering tent set up on the front lawn, blocking the view of most of the house.
There is a lovely rose garden to the right of the house which is open to the public. I can see future visits in my future.
I agree, thanks for sharing this interesting history. One of my sons marched in the Rose Parade when he was in high school with the band. It was a great experience for him.
Great story and lovely shot!
That is so awesome that all those wealthy houses are in a row!
What a gorgeous house and I also look forward to the rose shots from this garden :)
While its not the greatest picture in the world, I like how you tied the history of the building in with it. I think you would need to photograph it early in the morning, to get better light (since if I remember correctly, the house is on the west side of Orange Grove, which goes north/south at that point).
@mtngal
Correct, morning would be the proper time to shoot Tournament House, but I'm rarely awake in the morning. LOL It was either afternoon or not at all. ;-) If a shot requires morning light, normally I try to wait until I can fit my schedule around it. But, I really wanted to get a shot of this house because of that whole 'rose' event coming up, and this was the so-so result.
I do feel compelled to attempt to add something interesting to boring shots, to make up for things. ;-) Glad you enjoyed it.
