Hello Peter. I hope you do not mind me asking this. I am so impressed with your work, the clarity and tones. Do you do much post processing? I use a lot of film and really try to avoid processing however my scanning technique is not great so sometimes sharpen my images. Also do you have a store of Shanghai 100? I cannot get hold of it anymore. Sadly I think it has stopped being made - do you have a supplier? Kind regards.
Generally I manually scan all my photos in professional mode without automatic settings to include everything in the histogram: this stops tones being cut. I don't do much post processing but adjust the curves and contrast slightly sometimes, spot for dust and scratches. I try to avoid adding sharpness as it introduces unwanted artifacts. I scan at 1600dpi, but these are 4x5 sheets of film so are large files with a lot of detail. The advantage of 4x5 film and quality lenses is that there is a high resolution of detail onto the negative. Generally I try to get it right in the camera and also use developers which support fine grain, and enhance the tones I am seeking, particularly in the darks. With this photo I was just using the sunny sixteen rule and not metering because I was feeling confident. I recently purchased some sheet Shanghai as part of a group buy organised through the large format forum. It is a film I like very much. In the past I have also found it on ebay. I like it a lot. Not sure where I can steer you to buy it at the moment. @spanner
