Years ago, I remember reading a book about Polynesian sailors, and their incredie feats of navigation, finding small islands not yet visible over the horizon.
One of the ways is orographic uplift causing small clouds to form. As they're caused by the terrain, they're effectively anchored to one spot and act like a massive flag saying "here be land!".
It still tickles me to see it in action.
