No photos of 'my' goose who was determinedly asleep yesterday at the pond in Bishops Waltham, but we did find that the Bishop's Palace, just next door, now opens in April not May.
So here are the ruins of the brew house and the bake house. Most of the Palace was built in the 12th century, by Henri de Blois, Bishop of Winchester, who also founded The Hospital of St Cross.
The brew house and bake house were 14th century additions. No idea how they managed for bread and ale prior to that.
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
I like the fence too. I'm just coming through the entrance and over a little wooden bridge here and these are the first buildings you see of the ruined Palace.
Super building, I imagine they built the bigger premise to make more ale and bread and then sell it; the windows are not very large it must have been hot in that bake house, I wonder if the government has consider re-introducing window tax, it wouldn't surprise me!
Lovely photo! I miss being able to visit the old castle sites. There were so many I wanted to see when I was stationed in England in the 1980s but I simply ran out of weekends!
I would love to explore this. We think we have something old here if it was built in the 1860's, and you have stuff from the 12th century! Amazing and beautiful.

Thanks, Gerry - could be a place to all visit some time in the future - have to get to Windsor first?!
Ray & I were trying to work out if there was glass in windows in12th century. Must have a look on my friend Google.
The walls are just flintstones and I think it's just rough mortar/cement holding them together.
365 is making me appreciate my own country.
