We made our third trip to see National Trust Christmas decorations, this time to Uppark House, the theme being a Victorian Christmas. As I walked into the huge and well-appointed kitchen I saw a lady volunteer dressed as a maid, complete with frilly white cap. I thought she would make a good portrait.
First I took a shot of a beautiful copper preserving pan, next some copper jelly moulds shining in the artificial light. Another visitor commented on the mix of ingredients for a Christmas pudding in a large bowl on a work surface and wondered whether to have a stir and a wish.
When I reached the maidservant, I asked for a portrait and explained my project. She was very happy to oblige and we introduced ourselves. Meet Sally.
I knew I had to be discreet and not annoy other visitors but I was lucky to be able to take several shots, regular head and shoulders portraits, photos by the mantelpiece/range and some full length ones.
Sally works on Fridays at this National Trust property and has been here for two and a half years, since she retired from full-time work, testing computer software. I thought this sounded a bit technical but she explained that she just needed to know enough 'to make sure it did what it said on the tin.' This work had been Sally's lifetime career of 40 years.
Rambling and the conservation project at Chichester Harbour are her other passions but unfortunately a health problem currently prevents her from pursuing these. Treatment is planned for the New Year and Sally hopes afterwards to return to her outdoor pursuits.
I thanked Sally and took her email address and have sent her photos and good wishes for a speedy return to full health and participation in her passions.
