My husband saw a Saw-whet Owl sitting in our wood pile, under which our squirrel lives. We were really concerned about the little guys welfare as we did not see him all day. When we came home today the the Saw-whet Owl had departed and there was our little guy serenading us with Ode to Joy, as he was just as happy to see us as we were to see him! Sounds a little peculiar but you become attached to these little guys.

Thank you for comments and favs, always appreciated.
@radiogirl I'm surprised a little Saw-whet could take a squirrel, but if this guy is a Red Squirrel, it probably could. I've never seen a Saw-whet in the wild. Great photo, by the way. Does he have something in his mouth, or is that a tooth?
@annepann This is the first time we have every seen a Saw-whet in the wild, it was gorgeous and not that big. My husband was out chopping wood and he could hear little squeaks that he thought was the squirrel, when he looked up no more than 5 feet away was the Saw-whet. My husband then ran into the house grabbed his camera and got about a dozen photos of him standing no more than 3 feet away from the owl. Although the Saw-whet is a small owl most of his body size is his head!
Those are his teeth that you see.
Thanks for your comments.
Fantastic shot, Kath. Instant FAV. Sounds like you have a little buddy. A little Crest may not be out of the question. :) I love that your husband saw a Saw-whet. I was so excited cause I saw my 2nd Owl ever today. I think it's a Snowy Owl which I'll likely post this week.
I'm glad he didn't get nabbed! I'm known as the neighbourhood crazy squirrel lady because I buy those big bags of expensive mixed nuts in their shell from Costco and strew a couple of handfuls in the front yard every morning as I leave for work. I love the little guys.
Great shot and capture of the expression.
Thought about your squirrel today because we saw five younguns playing in a tree apparently not too close to their nest. I think the teeth are just due to the angle.
You caught this one perfectly! Love that expression and enjoyed the tale about your concern for his well being. It's funny how they can become so much a part of our feelings.
Wonderful capture of this cute little squirrel! Love you story. Squirrels are easy either to love or hate depending on where you're coming from. Does your husband post on here as well I would love to see his pictures of the owl.
I chuckled when I first saw this darling picture, then held my breath as I read your commentary, fearing there was about to be bad news when you mentioned the owl. Shooo! Sigh of relief that your little buddy is okay! You're darn right about getting attached to these creatures. It's not peculiar at all in my book to care about their safety and well-being. Be safe Little Squirrel.
The owl is beautiful, but I'm glad he went away and didn't hurt this little fellow. I know I'd also become attached to him. Great capture, wonder what Beethoven would have thought! ) Fav of course!
Those are his teeth that you see.
