Knock on Wood

The Pileated is our largest woodpecker in Canada, about 18 inches in size. It makes a rhythmic drumming sound which echoes through the forest, It has a laughing like call. When it swoops into your yard you can't miss it for its white flashing underwings and its red crested hat! A magnificient and prehistoric looking bird!

Such impressive-sized woodpeckers! All that red on their heads really adds to how eye-catching they are. I remember well that pic of the two eating at the feeder last year.

Absolutely fantastic shot of this woodpecker. I had to go back and look at your shot from last year - Spectacular! What a sight that must have been in person. Probably one of the best shots I've seen. Fav here

One of these caused such incredible trauma for one of our dogs. It would hammer on the metal chimney which made our furnace sound like it was coming alive and in a mood for eating something - anything. Our poor Shayla shook for hours afterward, even after we had pitched plums at the woodpecker to try and scare it off. They don't scare easy ;-)
Great capture
