Although this looks like a cave one must be careful walking into it as there are shafts that come down and meet this tunnel from the mountain above but also there are shafts that go down from the tunnel itself in search of other silver veins. The interesting features about these tunnels is when you stand in front of them in mid July you will experience ice cold air coming out of the entrance.
Thank you for your comments and favs on yesterdays photo "Restricted", very much appreciated!
What a fascinating spot - and so well captured. I had just seen the word "adit" used as a crossword puzzle clue yesterday - otherwise I might not have caught your title. Love your snow!
@kathiecb to give you an idea of the size of the shaft my husband can walk in upright into the cave and he is over 6 feet tall, however The only animal I can imagine using this would be a bear and have never seen one in there nor bats.
Great find Kathy !! Wow it is large. I've been near one in the summer and yes it does give out a nice cool air. When it's so hot out one would feel like putting a tent and camp right in front of it. Do you know if there are many of those around Cobalt? Fav
@jocee Joce thank you for your comment and fav.
Yes there are, the old mining companies have plowed large rocks against the openings, however, with time many become exposed, Cross Lake is a good example where the old ski lodge used to be located.
Nice shot! I remember visiting a mine some years ago where they allowed us to walk partially into an adit- and experiencing the same cold breeze. It was a very hot day and it felt like you were standing in a refrigerator!
