This is a hummingbird clearwing moth on my Ivory Silk lilac tree.
It flies and moves just like a hummingbird. Like them, they can remain suspended in the air in front of a flower while they unfurl their long tongues and insert them in flowers to sip their nectar. They even emit an audible hum like hummingbirds.
Cool insects!
Thank you for all your comments and faves on Yesterday’s strawberry moon, Much appreciated!
They are so fascinating- the first time I saw one I thought it was a baby hummingbird at first because of that very distinctive hum. But it was so small I finally decided it had to be a butterfly or moth! Excellent shot.
