Dorothy @illinilass this is our public Library built in 1910, it was one of hundreds of similar looking libraries built by the American steel magnet and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie.
This library is unique because it was designed by local architects, Angus and Angus, and built with local limestone quarried on our lake’s Burnt Island.
When the library moved down the street it was bought by a local archeological firm.
Thank you so much! What an interesting building and history. Love that the stone was quarried locally. So glad it’s still used today.
I’m assuming this wasn’t taken recently since there is snow on the ground 😊
A very cool night shot. Vancouver also has a building paid for by Andrew Carnegie in 1901. It was Vancouvers main library branch until 1957 then fell into disrepair until 1980 when it became a community centre for the low income residents of the Downtown Eastside. It now also houses a branch of the library. You've inspired me to go downtown and get a shot of it.
I’m so thankful the building has a new tenant. It is such a grand building. I did not know that Andrew Carnegie built libraries. The best, most enduring gift of all, so wonderful.
I’m assuming this wasn’t taken recently since there is snow on the ground 😊
I think you started something Dorothy. @illinilass
