Stuck waiting for the 10 am - 2 pm delivery of my new dishwasher so I played around in the kitchen, using the macro settings on the camera menu. I actually read part of the manual (what a novel approach) to learn some of the finer points. I typically don't read instructions; I just like someone to show me the steps. Anyway, I tried it out and here's the result. The others I did of the African Violets weren't as sharp as I would have liked.
Well, I'd say that was worth reading the manual as the shots are crystal clear! But, like you, I'd rather someone show me, and I used the manual and other books I've bought about my camera only when I have to.
