African bush elephants are the largest living creatures on land. They use their large ears to radiate excess heat and their trunks for communicating and handling objects and food. They can eat up to 500 pounds of vegetation- mostly tree leaves--a day, ripping apart plants and knocking down trees with their tusks to reach the leaves. They also drink about 50 gallons of water each day. Herds are made up of related females and their young, directed by the eldest female, the matriarch. This group of about 18 elephants came out of the dense bush, cut across the road, walking within 10 feet of our jeep, as they headed toward the river. What a thrill to see these magnificent creatures at close range in Kruger National Park.
How exciting to see these magnificent animals so close! I love elephants but know how dangerous they can be! It must have been a thrilling moment! Fav!
