The bigger their nest gets, the more protective these wasps are getting. I took all my photos today with two wasps buzzing around my head, trying to get rid of me. I only stayed for a minute as I don't like interrupting / annoying them. I'm sure I'll be stung a few times before I'm done with observing the nest!
The three wasps at the entrance were the air conditioning team, using their wings to fan cool air into the nest, while the others were in and out doing construction. I took this in portrait but decided I liked it more rotated. You can see the nest in a photo from just over a week ago, when it was a bit smaller than this, here - http://365project.org/roachling/365/2014-06-12
@mcsiegle
Thanks, glad you liked it! I'm sure there will be more photos of this to come in my project!
@snoopybooboo - HALF a wasp? what happened to the other half (did you swallow it?!) and how was it still crawling?! I wonder how it came to be 'halved' anyway.
@roachling Yes I felt this lump in my mouth and thought you don't get that in an orange tango drink. so I took it out with my hand and then saw the other half still moving out of the can.
This is a great shot. We noticed a massive one on our garage the other day. I have no idea how long it has been there. Must look through my photos tomorrow and post a shot. We are going to have to get rid of it though because our gardener is severely allergic to them.
Amazing pic. I like this. It makes me see them as part of nature's big plan rather than nasty pesky things. @snoopybooboo blimey, worst nightmare, except for when a wasp crawled up my trouser leg. That was worse.
I once 'hugged' a huge tree (was measuring it in armspans), not realising there was a wasp nest at the base which I must have distrurbed. Dave was helping and a load of wasps flew into our jackets and started stinging! We couldn't get them off fast enough, we had 8 stings between us! Fun memory though!

That's a shame. Can't he wear a bee suit until they've gone, hehe!
