New England Stone Walls

I read an argument once for New England's stone walls being the 8th Wonder of the World; more total weight than the pyramids, made without slave labor over a much shorter period of time, etc. They make great homes for squirrels and other critters too!

Are these to outline people's land boundaries? That is a lot of work, though there is a lot of stone in New England!
