5 Phoebe Eggs by rob257

5 Phoebe Eggs

Not sure what to make of this. A pair of phoebes are tending this nest, but one egg certainly looks different from the others.
wow - four of these things are just like the other ... I wonder what lays an egg like the one that is not kinda the same!

beautiful nest. Might be a Cowbird, they lay their eggs in others nests and make the other bird raise them!

@catwhiskers it does look like one of their eggs.

Lovely little nest! Please find it in your heart to get rid of that cowbird egg. Cowbird chicks will hatch first and are very aggressive about killing the other chicks.

Oh, that is a shame about the Cowbird egg. I go back and forth between hating cowbirds for being nest parasites (I think that is the term) and trying to accept that this a natural occurrence.

Like Anne, I was conflicted about how to proceed but after seeing all 5 phoebe chicks fledge last year, I'm not about to put this brood at risk. The cowbird egg will go first thing in the morning. And thanks for the great link, Nan!

good idea, I had a feeling it couldn't be a 'good egg' ;)

Glad to read you're getting rid of the cowbird egg. Must be fun to watch the Phoebes grow and fledge.

Wonderful find, and great capture. I'm like Anne @annepann in two minds and glad it have not to be my decision. Just go with your heart.

Terrific photo and then I love all the comments about the different egg! Didn't know about these birds and the things they do!

Thanks for following along on this adventure. I'm going to open the egg now. Doubt the results will make for a good photo , but I'll let you know it turns out.
