The fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square was originally intended to display an equestrian statue of William IV, but the idea was abandoned because it was too expensive. After more than 150 years, the plinth finally came into use, and has been displaying a changing roster of commissioned artworks since 1998.
The latest commission is 'The End' by Heather Phillipson - a sculpture of a melting pile of whipped cream with a giant fly on one side and a drone on the other which transmits a live feed of Trafalgar Square on the website www.theend.today. It is a comment on Trafalgar Square as a place of protests and celebrations.
