Here lies John Innes (St Mary's, Merton)

The name John Innes will be familiar to British gardeners, as it is a popular brand of compost. During his lifetime, John Innes was a landowner in Merton, south west London. When he died in 1904, he gave some of his money to horticultural research. Thanks to his funding, we have a better understanding of plant genetics:
