The Man by salza

The Man

I'm really not comfortable doing any form of photography that involves humans. My get pushed challenge from Anne De Manser @kwaussies - 'I see lots of magnificent animal photos in your albums but not many people so my challenge for you will be a portrait of someone you don't know.'

Critique welcome

@kwaussies A portrait of a stranger!

Well done! I agree, not in my comfort zone!!

Well done - you have captured this stranger to perfection.

You are not the only one, my get pushed this week is a portrait, which I've yet to talk anyone into, i must scare people or something.

@zosimasy I must be honest here Charles, I never asked this man if I could take his picture I just did! It has been severely cropped as well.

Good job on you! This is super hard for me too.

This was certainly worth the discomfort of the moment - its a beautiful portrait. I hope you sent a copy to your subject.

Well...a great candid shot ! He is a great subject! Well done!

I think for a candid that you were obviously trying to capture without being detected it came out great! If you were asking for permission to do the shot you would want to pay attention to the direction of the light (he's squinting a bit). Another tact could be that you feature something interesting about him- like his hands (they look interesting to me at least!). But for not being comfortable taking candid portraits, I think it's great and I totally empathize. I'd be uncomfortable too.

Wonderful shot of him posed in a relaxed way!

It's a great candid portrait. He looks so relaxed, the lighting is good (though Ann is right about him squinting, but to me that adds to the candid feel), and the colors work well.

I think this just makes a totally different shot. Neither better nor worse than the other

Fantastic candid shot, Sally...congratulations...well cropped, great natural expression achieved by him not being aware of you. Severe cropping is often helpful to keep your distance (so is a mild telephoto lens!). The distractions are minimal and the framing is great!

Much prefer this one. Great shot. Keep going with photographing strangers, once you get used to it you'll find it quite rewarding.

@pennyp when I'm out in a tourist area it is so much easier. Living in a small farming community, candid street photography is a whole new ball game!

nice portrait here - and it's difficult to take candid pictures (says someone who has quite a few on her photostreams)

@salza Well done! I like the cropped version much better. The reason I like stranger portraits is that you have to imagine the 'story' that's going on around the subject. I think you chose a great subject for that.

i love a man who is comfortable wearing pink. :-) great job, sally, especially with the crop. the clarity is great. maybe i should do a month of candids. or maybe not.
