I'm really not comfortable doing any form of photography that involves humans. My get pushed challenge from Anne De Manser @kwaussies - 'I see lots of magnificent animal photos in your albums but not many people so my challenge for you will be a portrait of someone you don't know.'
I'm from Tulbagh, Western Cape, South Africa. Tulbagh is a small farming community.
Get Pushed Challenge: I have been doing this challenge on and off...
I think for a candid that you were obviously trying to capture without being detected it came out great! If you were asking for permission to do the shot you would want to pay attention to the direction of the light (he's squinting a bit). Another tact could be that you feature something interesting about him- like his hands (they look interesting to me at least!). But for not being comfortable taking candid portraits, I think it's great and I totally empathize. I'd be uncomfortable too.
It's a great candid portrait. He looks so relaxed, the lighting is good (though Ann is right about him squinting, but to me that adds to the candid feel), and the colors work well.
Fantastic candid shot, Sally...congratulations...well cropped, great natural expression achieved by him not being aware of you. Severe cropping is often helpful to keep your distance (so is a mild telephoto lens!). The distractions are minimal and the framing is great!
@salza Well done! I like the cropped version much better. The reason I like stranger portraits is that you have to imagine the 'story' that's going on around the subject. I think you chose a great subject for that.
i love a man who is comfortable wearing pink. :-) great job, sally, especially with the crop. the clarity is great. maybe i should do a month of candids. or maybe not.
