Last Saturday we decided to go to L-Isla for the evening. L-Isla is how this city is known among us Maltese. It is the old name of the village, derived from the Italian word Isola (or island) as it is a tongue of land that juts out into the waters of the Grand Harbour. The Knights of St John, when they came to Malta in 1530 set their headquarters in Birgu (another part of the Grand Harbour). With their increase in numbers in Malta they spilled into L-Isla and Grand Master Claude de La Sengle declared it a city which took his name, Senglea. Foreigners coming to Malta prefer to call it by this name.
Our first stop in L-Isla was the Basilica (and Parish Church) dedicated to Our Lady of Victories to hear Sunday Mass. When this was over and the congregation was on its way out, I took some shots of the inside. This angel is part of the canopy over the main altar.
BTW everything went well at the dentist’s. I came back home with all my teeth in place. I had a filling made together with two pins to strengthen the filling. Another appointment for next week.
Thank you very much for looking and for your lovely comments on yesterday’s picture.
Beautiful light catching the edge of the canopy. I have never visited Malta but my Mum has been there quite often and always tells me about the numerous beautiful churches there.
