Fletcher Moss Park, Didsbury by sarahhorsfall

Fletcher Moss Park, Didsbury

It was another beautiful day here today, and I spent the afternoon in Fletcher Moss Park, which has a wild flower meadow, woodland, and this botanical garden known as the Rockery. I walked around all the different sections, with numerous pauses to sit and read and enjoy the sunshine.

A bit of history, for anyone interested: Alderman Fletcher Moss donated Fletcher Moss Gardens and his house, known as The Croft, to the people of Manchester in 1919. The Croft was the birthplace of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. In 1889 Emily Williamson formed a group called the Plumage League, with the aim of stopping the wholesale slaughter of birds in the cause of making women's hats. This grew in support and eventually joined forces with Mrs. Phillips' 'Fur and Feather League' in Croyden, to become the RSPB.
Beautiful picture which brings back loads of memories. I used to live round the corner from there when I was a student.

Fantastic spring colours Sarah, I love the red Acer tree as a centre piece to the image.

Municipal parks and gardens are often places of beauty and an oaisis of tranquility in our urban environment. I hope none of them get into poor state of repair or maintenance with all the recent planned cutbacks (oooh errrr....a little contraversial statement byPhil !!)

BTW: Thanks for all the comments on my pics last night :) Very kind of you to do so :)
