Shadowing

I'm shadowing the band photographer. Not because I have time to be the band photographer, but because this is her last year as her youngest is a senior. I know I can't commit to being the only person taking pictures next year, but I'm soaking up all of her knowledge and all of the information about what and when and why they take pictures, and testing out the limits of the lenses I already own...and thinking about my next lens purchase (even before the one I just ordered gets here) though it may not be until next season.

The main things I've learned after two evenings are: the field is dark, the flags are awesome, the brass reflects some fantastically lovely light right at sunset, and the poor kids in the back of the field are ridiculously hard to isolate in photos.
We don't have a band photographer, just crazy band-parents taking their own pictures, but what you have learned sounds right.
I love band and hope you have an awesome band-season too!

@ingrid01 Our band boosters organization is ultra organized and they expect - essentially require - all band parents to be involved in some way. If I'm going to drag photo equipment to practices and shows anyway, I may as well be official about it - more access that way, and honestly, it's the volunteer opportunity I'm most interested in anyway. :) I'm excited for the season, and I'm looking forward to...15(!) years of seasons by the time my youngest graduates. (Makes it worth investing in some lenses, yeah?)
