Have flash, will play. Lots to learn still and lots of practice required to get artistic lighting, but I have a good start in understanding some of the principles of bouncing and diffusing my flash after getting some help from a professional photographer this afternoon, so I had to come back and practice on one of the models I could find at home tonight. Would be really nice if I could find a real mannequin at a reasonable price to use as a model!
@meotzi@anniesue@narayani Thank you all so much for the valuable feedback. Creepy isn't what I was going for so I clearly have a lot to learn about using flash properly to achieve the effect I want. Le Roux did warn me that lighting is a powerful tool in making people look scary, ugly, or beautiful once I learned to use it properly, and he mentioned there was a famous case of a Nazi industrialist being photographed with lighting that portrayed him as evil. I went and put those key words into Google and found the photo. He sure does look evil. It is worth studying that photo - not because I want to do that, but to learn how not to do it inadvertently. I guess I should save this image to a document with a description of how I set up the reflector so I know how to make someone or something look creepy at halloween?
