This is the river Lyvennet which runs through our land after starting it's winding way at a place called Black Dub on Crosby Fell. There is a monument at Black Dub which marks the place where Charles II rested with his army in 1651 when marching from Scotland following his coronation in Scone on 1st. January. there is an inscription on the monument which reads - HERE AT BLACK DUB
THE SOURCE OF THE LIVENNET
KING CHARLES THE II
REGALED HIS ARMY
AND DRANK OF THE WATER
ON HIS MARCH FROM SCOTLAND
AUGUST 8 1651. The river Lyvennet joins with the larger River Eden near Temple Sowerby, eventually ending up in the Solway Firth.
It's great to hear that connection with Charles II - and I love the phraseology "regaled his army and drank of the water" Lovely serene photo and a beautiful spot
