Appleby 5-12-2015

I did not take this picture it is one that I borrowed from the internet. Unfortunately I can't give credit to the photographer as I do not know who took it. I hope they forgive me for posting it here but I wanted to show, and record the devastation Storm Desmond brought to the town or Appleby and many other communities of Cumbria on this day. I could not take any pictures myself on this day as all the roads out of the area were flooded and we were unable to travel.
This is the main bridge that crosses the river Eden which flows through Appleby. The Gypsies bring their horses to wash in the river just on the right during the annual horse fair in June. The bridge has been shut for over a week because of fear of damage to the structure of the historic bridge. This closure totally cut the town into two halves with those on the left had side of the river having to travel many miles to access shops/doctor/dentist etc in the town. There are two more bridges, both footbridges, which cross in the town but one was partially washed away and the other closed again because it was feared it was unsafe. Happily both this bridge and the footbridge have been inspected by divers now and declared undamaged and are now open.
Frightful - a positive disaster! Hope the town gets lots of help!

Is this close to where you live Shirley? I've been watching this on the news and it looks like there has been some awful weather in the UK

@maggiemae There has been many donations given to the flood appeal and the Government has pledged some help but don't know how much. The mountain rescue, and army have been doing a great job helping to firstly rescue people from their homes then to help them clear out after the water receded.

@deborah63 This town is 7 miles from where we live. Most of the roads out of out village were flooded that day - hence I couldn't take the photo, I couldn't have got :) Nothing like the English weather to be unpredictable!!!

I saw Appleby on the news and remembered that you weren't that far away from there. Dreadful time for all those affected by the floods.

@365projectorgchristinewebb @flowerfairyann Thank you for you comments. Awful for those affected but even sadder when you saw all the household things and shop contents stacked on the roadside ready to be taken away. If you would like to see more pictures if you type Appleby floods into Google there are loads of pictures.

Wow!! We are well acquainted with floods in our part of the world and know the mess they leave behind.

Frightening Shirley. A similar scene in St Michaels on Wyre next to us, water has no boundaries.

@terryliv The mess they leave behind is unbelievable, and I feel very sorry for those that have this to face so near Christmas.

@happypat Water is very hard to stop if it decides it wants to go somewhere. Impossible to live without but devastating when there is too much.
