Today we had a ride to see the bridge at Pooley Bridge which has been destroyed by Storm Desmond . It was a lovely old stone bridge which had three arches that crossed the River Eamont which flows out of Ullswater. I think it was built in the 16th century. The small picture, which I took from the internet, shows the bridge as it was.
The lake and the river are both still running very high as can be seen by the railings in the foreground that are still in the water. The foreground of the small picture is actually gravel that is underwater in front of the railings in the main shot.
@gijsje@nadia_mt Thank you for your comments. It is such a shame to see something that has stood the trials of time for so long disappear. Nadia, it did not really deteriorate it was the sheer volume of water which actually washed the bridge away. It was in daily use until then.
@gijsje@peterlgrave@onewing@koalagardens@tonydebont@hermann@elmay@bkbinthecity@roachling@terryliv@dizzyd@tosee@flowerfairyann Thank you all for the wonderful comments. It is very sad to see this iconic bridge gone and although I would like to think they would rebuild it as it was I don't think that will happen. It would make more seance to put a single span bridge in and as it was only single file with traffic lights on I think they will widen it. Whatever they do I think locals will want it done as fast as possible as many are facing a 10 mile diversion.
