How it worked is the long handle on the right is lifted up and the root - swede, turnip or beet -is put in the centre where the 'slats' are. There is a plate attached to the handle where the slats are and when the handle is lowered the plate pushes the root through the slats/ blades and chopping it into pieces to be fed to the animals.
