This is a full strength Narthex - looking out of the Norman South Porch entrance of Malmesbury Abbey towards St Paul's Spire.
Malmesbury Abbey was built in the 1100's, and was closed in the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII. Finally re-instated as a church, it now continues in that guise to the present day.
St Paul's Spire is all that remains of the 14th century St Paul's Church ruined some time in the 16th century.
I had to hide in the corner of the porch to avoid the floodlights to get this shot, so I apologise to all the decent church folk of Malmesbury who probably thought I was up to no good as they came out of their service tonight. This photograhy lark is going to get me into big trouble one of these days....
I imagine you set upon by a horde of angry church ladies, who beat you about the head with their purses, all the while, keeping their hats perfectly on straight.
Until then, please bring us more of these shots -- absolutely gorgeous -- love the framing, lighting, all of it.
@ridley Hi Michelle, to be fair, most of them just gave me a good long stare until a tried a cheery hello. I think they thought I was just mad - maybe I (we?) are!
@ch1ppy_m1nton Thanks Chippy, a bit of artistic licence with the use of the word if truth be told, as this is better described as a porch - but narthex doesn't half sound better!
Fantastic! For a second, I thought you meant some kind of entrance to Narnia. @ridley Totally agree with Michelle; love to see more of these. Or a picture of you lurking in the shadows being accosted by angry church ladies.
Cracker Kev, Great lighting on the floor, and a very nice exposure all round I'd say. You can have a Fav as reward for looking weird to the folk of Malmesbury (more so than usual!)
@malc@paul2782@tomo87@joeboo Thanks for the favs boys. really appreciate it - particularly since I got ticked off by my better half for getting home late last night - makes it feel worthwhile!
@bardejov Thanks for the kind comments, feedback and the fav! The floodlights were either side of the arch, so Ithink that is how there was enough light for the long exposure to pick up the detail.
